Title A name given to the resource Everson Funeral Home Description An account of the resource Everson Funeral Home at 808 First Center Avenue in Brodhead, Wisconsin. The house was built in 1872 for Charles Thompson a lumberman. It was sold to L. W. Terry and then purchased by Tallie E. Everson in 1931. Mr. Everson opened his undertaking business on August 6, 1920 and started with a chapel in the Searles Building downtown. He had purchased land to build a funeral home, but changed his mind and decided to remodel his home to accommodate funerals because he wanted them to have a more homey feel. He opened the present location on May 2, 1931. The funeral home is the oldest in all of Green County having been in business 105 years. Tallie's son, Tallie II, followed in his father's footsteps. The funeral home is in it's third generation and is presently being run by Tallie III. Title A name given to the resource A & W Root Beer Stand Description An account of the resource An early photo of the A & W Root Beer Stand in Brodhead, Wisconsin. The building was built in 1954 by Al Rasmussen. He owned the business and he had several managers in the early years. A fire destroyed the building in August of 1958. It was rebuilt and Dale and Louise Roenneburg took over management in 1966. Mr. Rasmussen passed away in 1968 and the Roenneburgs purchased the business. There were many improvements and expansion over the next 15 years. The Roenneburgs employed 115 high school and college students over that time. The drive-in was sold to LeRoy Behrens in 1980 and sold again in 1981 to Jack and Gloria Melvin. The Melvins ran the business until 1990 when it was sold to Gregg and Jane Godfrey. Th e drive-in was closed on October 3, 1993. The building was located on the corner of 17th Street and West Seventh Avenue. The building was removed and the land is now owned by Kuhn North America. There is a newspaper account of an A & W Root Beer Stand opening in Brodhead in May of 1939, however it was at a different location. Title A name given to the resource The Shorb Hotel Description An account of the resource The Shorb Hotel at 904 West Exchange Street in Brodhead, Wisconsin. The front half of this building was originally The Young House built in1868. George Fields acquired 695 acres in a land grant from the United States government in 1843, during the John Tyler administration. John L. V. Thomas purchased 80 acres of this land from Mr. Fields in 1853 for $800. It is on this land that the plat of Brodhead was laid out in 1856. John Young purchased lot 1 of block 100 from Frederick Gombar in 1868. The Young House Hotel was constructed that same year for $16,000. In 1895 it was purchased by Hugh H. Shorb. Mr. Shorb built a matching three story addition to the south and remodeled the building in 1899. It was then the Shorb Hotel. It had 20 sleeping rooms. Mr. Shorb ran the hotel until1940. Salesmen would arrive by train an display their wares in sample rooms in the hotel. Note the carbon-arc streetlight at top center of the photo. J. B. Pierce started in the hardware business in Monticello, Wisconsin on August 10, 1891, with his brother-in-law. In January of 1902 he took over the business alone. In 1905 he came to Brodhead and bought out Russell and Johnson. He took on a partner, George Marshall. Other partners were; Fred Marty 1910 - 1916, Earl Bush 1916 - 1930, and J. R. Ties 1930 - 1936. Upon the death of Mr. Ties in 1936 his son Dwight became associated with his father; first as a manager and later as a partner. Upon the death of J. B. Pierce in June 1949 Dwight Pierce became sole owner. Dwight passed away in July 1979 and the store became incorporated. When Dwight became owner the store name was changed to Pierce Hardware. The building was constructed in 1868-69 and was Brodhead's first opera house. The business celebrated it's 80th year in business in 1985. Title A name given to the resource Bellman's Grocery - Body and Fender Shop Description An account of the resource The brick building on the left was Bellman's Grocery Store. It was located on the south side of the eight hundred block of East Exchange Street in Brodhead, Wisconsin. Bil and Tress Bellman started their business June 29, 1922. It was located approximately where the Bank of Brodhead drive through is presently. It is not known when the store closed but a story in the local paper dated 1960 says the business has been in the present location for 38 years. The store was on the first floor and the family lived on the second floor. The metal building on the right was used for many purposes through the years. In the photo it is the Body and Fender Shop. This building was moved to the south side of the Ford dealership which was on the southwest corner of Tenth Street and East Second Avenue. Today Pinnow and Associates have storage units where the Ford Dealership had been. This metal building would have been on the west side of the ten hundred block of East Second Avenue, about where the driveway between the storage units are now. Title A name given to the resource Brodhead Flouring Mill Description An account of the resource In the 1850s a flour mill was very important to a growing town. The village of Decatur had one at the dam on Decatur Lake and the Sugar River on the north edge of the village. It was owned by John and Thomas Hendrie. When Decatur missed out on the railroad the brothers knew their future was in Brodhead. The village fathers wanted a mill and talked the brothers into moving their business to Brodhead, The problem being no water power at Brodhead to power the mill. The village gave the Hendries $8000 to build a raceway to Brodhead to run the mill. They started construction in 1860, but ran out of money in 1862 with it two- thirds completed. H.B. Stewart and S.C. Pierce came to the rescue by buying half interest in the venture for $7000. The raceway was completed by May of 1863 and a mill was built where the raceway turns back toward the Sugar River on 11th Street a block west of West Third Avenue. It was a three story building with 5 large stones, that ground 100 bushels of flour a day. The mill was an important part of Brodhead until it was destroyed by fire in 1929. An electrical power plant was built on it's site. Title A name given to the resource Brodhead Electric Power Plant Description An account of the resource The electric power plant in Brodhead, Wisconsin. The photo was taken from the top of the old water tower. The plant was located at 1201 Eleventh Street. It used water power from the Mill Race that was originally dug to provide power to turn the large mill stone in the grain mill. Brodhead was one of the first cities in Wisconsin to have electrical power. The plant started producing power in 1889 and was built by C. W. Lucas and Dr. G. Bennett. It was run by A. F. Anderson. At first the plant only ran from dark until midnight, unless there was a dance or big celebration, when it ran sometimes until 2 AM. At first it was direct current, which meant the further you were from the plant the less power you had. At the beginning they did not have meters so the cost was 70 cents a month per 16 candle power lamp. The very first lamp was at Clark's drugstore. C. N. Pierce owned the plant for a time and it was purchased by the city in about 1914. The plant stopped producing power in the mid 1960's. The building no longer exists. Title A name given to the resource Dedrick and Marty Hardware Store Description An account of the resource Dedrick and Marty Hardware was located at 1024 First Center Avenue in Brodhead Wisconsin, now the location of Deb's Bar. The photo was at the location of the store when it first started. Fred Marty is on the left and Frank H. Dedrick is on the right. The business was one of the oldest in Brodhead. The store was established by George T. Spaulding in 1870. He sold it to Metcalf and Serman in 1883. It became Sherman and Moore in 1884. R. C. Murdock bought the partnership and ran it until 1900. It was then bought by William Cobb and L. Brooks. Brooks soon took sole ownership and in 1916 sold it to Dedrick and Marty. They moved the business one store north to 1022 First Center Avenue, now Jeremy Pinnow & Associates. Frank H. Dedrick's son Frank W. joined the firm in 1935 and took over the business from his father. Frank W.'s son Brain joined the firm in 1971. Before this building was donated to the city by Henry Clay Putnam the city jail was in a little building just south of the railroad tracks at 1105 First Center Avenue. That building is still standing and has been used for many purposes through the years. Before that offenders were lock up in a freight car in the depot yards. This police station had one jail cell The jail cell was condemned in 1966 and removed in a remodel in 1974. The police department was eventually moved to it's present location at the corner of West Exchange Street and West Third Avenue which was the old fire department. Tobacco growing and marketing was a large part of Brodhead's economy from 1880 through the early 1900's. There were several tobacco sheds in the city. William M. Fleek manufactured cigars and employed 40 workers. The last people to to grow tobacco in Brodhead was the C. T. Pfisterer and Jake Pfisterer familys in late 1950's and early 1960's. Title A name given to the resource Bank of Brodhead Description An account of the resource The origin of the Bank of Brodhead goes back to 1869. In August of that year Bowen and Company was formed. In 1871 the bank was chartered as the First National Bank of Brodhead. In 1875 the national charter was given up. E. Bowen and J, V. Richardson bought out the stockholders and operated as the Bank of Brodhead. In 1881 Cornelius N. Carpenter bought the banking business. In 1896 several community members secured a state charter and the present Bank of Brodhead was born. It opened on April 30, 1896 with $50,000 capital. Shortly after opening they did business in the Laube Building on the corner of First Center Avenue and West Exchange Street in Brodhead, Wisconsin. In 1962 the bank moved to its new building at 806 East Exchange Street.
