Title

Edward H. Brodhead Church Bell

Description

Edward H. Brodhead, chief engineer for the Milwaukee and Mississippi Railroad, promised to donate a bell to the first church built in the new town if the town were named after him. The Methodist Episcopal Church was the first to complete a church building in the fall 1858. Mr. Brodhead presented a bell weighing 795 pounds and costing $400 to the Methodists. In 1969 the Evangelical United Brethren and Methodist Churches merged and came together in the EUB building. When the old Methodist Church building was sold the bell was removed and put into storage. In 1975 the bell was moved to the United Methodist Church front lawn at 501 First Center Avenue, Brodhead, Wisconsin. It was rededicated on October 12, 1975. Pictured in front of the bell are Ann L. Schwartz holding Kristen A. Schwartz.
